About Strato

Nearly every site we attribute to Strato is German. Concentration of that degree is uncommon in a hosting dataset, and it makes the entry less interesting as a technology fact and more interesting as a market map.

The company sells shared hosting, domains, mailboxes and managed servers out of Berlin, mostly to small and mid sized businesses, and has done so since 1997, with ownership sitting inside a large German telecoms group. Longevity produces a particular install base. Many customers signed up long ago and never left. A lot of the sites have not been touched in years. Tradespeople, clubs, clinics and local retailers make up a substantial part of the file, and for most of them the plan is the entire online presence.

As of September 2026 we place 4,130,590 sites with the provider, 3,874,896 of them in Germany, and .de carries the domain mix. Country and suffix agreeing this closely is itself the finding. A hosting brand whose customers register almost exclusively under the national suffix is selling into a domestic market on domestic terms, in the national language, with local payment methods and data residency as part of the pitch rather than as a footnote.

Presence tells you about the customer far more than about the code. A site on a shared platform of this kind is not making its own infrastructure decisions. The stack is whatever the control panel offers, language runtime and content management system included, updates land when the panel updates them, and there is rarely a developer on retainer. Anyone selling a product that assumes a deployment pipeline is looking at the wrong population. Anyone selling something that installs from a plugin directory, or runs entirely in the browser, is looking at the right one.

Attribution is inferential and deserves its caveat stated in full. We assign a host from network ownership and from infrastructure fingerprints in the response, which identifies the machine serving the page rather than the party paying the bill. A domain parked on the platform while the real site lives elsewhere still counts. Reseller arrangements blur the picture further, because an agency can hold the account for clients who never hear the brand name, and those clients are the ones a competitor would most want named. Anyone building a sales motion on this column should expect a share of rows to resolve to an intermediary.

Competing hosts and cloud providers read provider level lists as switching targets, filtered by content management system and by how long a site has sat unchanged. Agencies read them geographically, since a town of small business sites on one shared platform is a redesign pipeline with a common technical brief. Security researchers read them because shared Hosting concentrates outdated software, and one unpatched plugin family inside a single provider's address space is a different kind of incident from the same plugin scattered across the internet. Analysts use the column as a proxy for the small business web of one country, which is otherwise awkward to measure at all.

A domain by domain check answers where one site is hosted. The download answers who hosts a market: provider share by suffix, by platform, by site category and by country, with the rest of each site's detected stack sitting on the same row. A lookup service is not shaped to answer that, however many times you call it.
