About Twikoo

Static site generators removed the database, and the comment box went with it. A page compiled ahead of time has nowhere to put what a reader types, so discussion has to come back as a separate service. Twikoo is one answer to that problem, licensed MIT, written in JavaScript and first appearing in our records in 2020, designed to run on serverless functions and a database the site owner controls rather than on somebody else's platform.

Self hosting is the point of the design and also the reason our figure is a floor. As of October 2026 we see Twikoo on 2 sites. A deployment can place its backend on any domain the owner picks, the widget is often loaded only on article pages rather than on a home page, and a build that bundles the script together with other assets can leave no recognizable marker at all. Any of those three is enough to hide a working installation from a crawl.

The Comment systems label our taxonomy assigns deserves care as well, because the software manages discussion attached to a site rather than the site's content. A researcher filtering on the category alone will pull a comment widget in alongside publishing platforms and have to filter again.

A match says something quite specific about who owns the domain. A site carrying the widget is a static site with an owner technical enough to deploy a serverless backend, unwilling to hand reader identities to an advertising funded comment service, and more likely to be a personal or documentation site than a commercial one. Owners of that description form a real segment, and it is the segment that buys hosting, developer tooling and privacy oriented services.

One domain checked by hand confirms one such site and stops there. The exported list gives the whole matched set with the generators, hosts and frameworks detected beside the widget on the same pages, which is how you learn which static site ecosystems the software actually travels with, whether adoption follows those ecosystems as they grow, and where the community using it is concentrated.
