About styled-components

The library never appears in a page as a file of its own. styled-components compiles styles into the JavaScript bundle and injects them at runtime, so what a crawler sees is residue: generated class names in a recognisable shape and a style element written into the document head. Detection depends on that residue surviving the build, which it usually does, because the naming scheme is part of how the library works rather than a cosmetic detail a build step can discard.

Residue of that kind implies a good deal about the site around it. A page carrying the library is a React page, since the library exists to style React components, and a React page is an application build rather than a document assembled inside a content system. Somebody chose a component architecture, somebody runs a bundler, and somebody deploys the output. Written in JavaScript and released under MIT in 2016, the library costs nothing to adopt, so its presence marks a team's taste and a team's tooling rather than a purchase.

Where the record earns its price is the version. We hold 117 distinct versions across the population, and the sites cluster on 5.3.11. A version string here is not a live number. Styles are compiled when the site is built, so the version baked into a bundle is whatever was current the last time somebody ran a build and shipped it. Clustering on one release is a map of deployment inertia, not of what the maintainers are publishing today.

For a developer tools company, a hosting platform or anyone selling into frontend teams, deployment inertia is the signal worth buying. A site frozen on an older release has not had its frontend rebuilt in a long time, which says something about whether an active team, an active budget and any appetite for new tooling still exist behind it. A site tracking recent releases says the opposite. Sorting 317,638 sites into those two piles is not work a per-domain lookup can do, because the question was never about any single domain.

The geography looks like what a JavaScript library's geography usually looks like. 195,297 of the sites resolve to United States and the domain mix is concentrated in .com, which reflects where React hiring happens rather than anything about the library itself.

Two limits are worth stating plainly. Aggressive minification and unusual build configuration can strip the recognisable class prefix, and sites in that state drop out of the count entirely rather than appearing as unknowns. And where a version cannot be read it is recorded as missing rather than guessed, so the version breakdown covers a subset of the detected population and should be read as a sample of it.
