Nobody updates a WordPress theme on schedule. Plugins get nagged into place by the dashboard and by security scanners, while the theme is the layer people are most reluctant to touch, because a bad update rearranges pages a client already approved. Neve shows the habit with unusual clarity.

As of September 2026 we see the theme on 125,535 sites and record 392 distinct version strings among them, with 4.2.11 the release reported most often. Fragmentation on that scale is normal for a theme and it is exactly what makes the field useful. A site several releases behind is rarely a site with a maintenance retainer, and a site on a current release usually has somebody watching it. The version column turns a flat roster of installations into a rough map of which sites are being looked after and which are not.

Neve itself is a WordPress themes theme published by ThemeIsle, written for PHP and distributed under GPL v2, with a free core and paid add-ons that unlock starter sites, header and footer building, and shop layouts. The theme is built to stay light and to cooperate with the page builders that most small sites are assembled in, which places it in a specific part of the market: freelancers and small studios delivering client work on a budget, and owners who assembled the site themselves after watching a tutorial. Sites running it are not enterprise builds, and they are not abandoned either, since somebody chose a theme rather than accepting whatever shipped with the install.

Geography is comparatively flat. United States accounts for 37,945 of the installations we see, which leaves a large remainder spread across other markets, and the .com weighting in the domain mix reflects the same international spread rather than a single national base. A theme sold in an open marketplace behaves that way, unlike a builder bundled with one country's hosting.

First released in 2018, the theme is recent enough to work as a rough date filter. A site carrying it was built or rebuilt after that point, so the population skews toward newer projects rather than legacy estates, which matters when you are hunting for sites still inside their first redesign cycle.

Two limits are worth naming. Theme detection reads asset paths and generated markup in the served page, so aggressive minification, asset merging or a full-page cache that rewrites URLs can hide a theme we would otherwise see, and a child theme can report its parent instead of itself. Version strings come from the same served evidence, which means a hardened site that strips them drops out of the version distribution without dropping out of the count. The two limits are not fatal, and both push the numbers in the same direction, downward. A per-domain lookup tells you which theme one site runs. The downloadable list lets you filter an entire population by theme and version at once, cross-referenced with the plugins, hosts and ecommerce tools on the same domains, which is what finding outdated stacks or building an outreach list sorted by attention actually requires.
