mod_ssl is an Apache HTTP Server module that provides strong cryptography for the web server using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols. It enables HTTPS connections, certificate-based authentication, and encrypted communication between clients and the Apache server.

mod_ssl is a core component of virtually every Apache-based HTTPS deployment and has been included as a standard part of Apache HTTP Server since version 2.0. It integrates with OpenSSL to provide up-to-date cipher support, certificate management, and compliance with modern TLS standards. Configuration options allow administrators to enforce specific TLS versions, cipher suites, and HSTS policies. As HTTPS has become the standard for all web traffic, mod_ssl remains one of the most universally deployed Apache modules.
