About mdBook
Nothing runs mdBook at request time. mdBook is a command line tool that turns a folder of Markdown into a static HTML book, so what we detect is the shape of its output: the generated navigation, the theme assets and the client side search index it leaves behind. The tool itself lives in someone's build pipeline, and the server delivering the result can be anything at all.
The distinction matters for reading the numbers, but it does not weaken what a detection implies. A site built this way is almost always documentation. The project came out of the Rust community, is written in Rust, carries the MPL license and first appeared in 2015, and adoption followed the language outward: crates, systems tooling, internal engineering handbooks, course material and the official Rust learning texts all ship in this format. Finding the fingerprint on a domain therefore says the organisation behind it writes software, publishes technical material in public, and has developers comfortable running a Rust toolchain in continuous integration.
Two limits are worth stating plainly. A default theme is easy to fingerprint, but a heavily customised book can lose the markers we depend on, so our figure is a floor rather than a census. And because the output is static, a documentation site generated once and never rebuilt looks identical to one that is updated weekly. Freshness has to come from other columns, not from the detection itself.
As of October 2026 the fingerprint appears on 228 domains, filed under Documentation for want of a better bucket. Developer tool vendors treat a population like this as pre qualified: every entry is an organisation with public documentation, a build pipeline and an audience of engineers, which is a harder set to assemble from company registries than from crawled pages. Documentation and technical writing platforms read the same rows as a migration pool. Researchers get a workable sample of how open source projects present themselves to the outside world. Looking up one domain tells you that one site is a generated book. The downloadable list tells you who the community around the tool actually is, and how it grows between releases.
