About GraphQL

GraphQL is a specification rather than a product, which makes it an unusual thing for a site level dataset to record. Nobody installs it the way they install a plugin. A team decides that its front end will fetch data through a typed query language against a single endpoint, and what we detect is the residue of that decision in the code the browser downloads.

The decision is architectural, so the signal is architectural too. A site using the query language has a front end decoupled from its data layer, a build pipeline that bundles JavaScript, and engineers who chose an API style rather than accepting whatever a CMS emitted. Headless commerce, application like interfaces and content platforms feeding several front ends all tend to land here. Server rendered brochure sites do not. Presence marks a site that was built by a development team, and to a vendor selling to development teams that distinction is worth more than the raw count.

Governance sits with GraphQL Foundation under a wider open source foundation, the specification carries the MIT licence, and the reference implementation and the client libraries that spread it are written in JavaScript. Published in 2015 after being developed inside a large social platform, the query language has no meaningful version number in the field, because the specification evolves by addition and no client announces a release to a page, which is why our record shows no version data.

As of October 2026 we detect GraphQL on 66,948 sites, with 57,822 of those assigned to Germany and the domain mix leaning towards .com. Concentration of that size in one country usually comes from a small number of large platforms, hosts or site generators shipping the same bundle across many customer sites, rather than from that many independent engineering decisions. Anyone using the country column to argue about national adoption should first check which platforms the domains sit on, because a single widely used shop system or site builder can move a country figure on its own.

Detection has a hard ceiling that is worth understanding before buying. We can see the query language when an endpoint is referenced in shipped JavaScript, when a known client library is bundled, or when a public endpoint responds in the expected way. A large amount of real usage is invisible, because much of it happens between servers, inside mobile applications, or behind a gateway that hands the browser something else entirely. The count measures browser visible usage, and the browser is only one consumer among several.

The gap is precisely why the list is useful in aggregate rather than case by case. Confirming one domain is a request away. Sizing the population of API driven front ends, splitting it by platform and country, watching it grow against server rendered alternatives, and pulling out the subset that also runs a given framework or commerce system are all questions about a set. Developer tool vendors, API infrastructure companies and analysts covering front end architecture want the shape of the set, not any single row in it.
