About Bread

Instalment financing does not appear at a checkout by accident. A merchant applies, gets underwritten, agrees to a fee on every financed order and only then integrates the widget, so the script is evidence of a commercial relationship somebody signed rather than a technical preference somebody had. Bread comes from Bread Financial under a Proprietary licence, is delivered as JavaScript running in the shopper's browser, and our records for the product begin in 2014.

The commercial reading is the useful one. A site offering financing at the point of sale is selling items expensive enough that a shopper hesitates, which narrows the population sharply: furniture, equipment, electronics, jewellery, dental and medical work, anything with a price that reads better quoted by the month than in full. As of October 2026 we detect Bread on 2 sites, and each of those merchants has a basket size that justified the paperwork.

Detection understates this category badly, and the reasons are worth knowing. Financing messages are often rendered on the server, injected by an ecommerce platform's own app layer, or shown only on product pages above a price threshold, so a crawl that sees a home page and a category page can miss a live integration entirely. Merchants also run several providers at once and rotate between them, which means presence and absence in the data both move faster than the underlying relationships do.

A further caution belongs on a name like this one. An ordinary English word raises the risk that a fingerprint catches something unrelated, although here the vendor and the product website recorded against the row agree with each other, which is more than can be said for some entries in any technology index.

For a payments team, a lender or a competing financing provider, the list is a map of merchants who have already been through underwriting once and can be approached with a switching argument rather than an education argument. The distinction is what makes the bulk extract worth having: individual lookups confirm merchants you already know about, while the file tells you which merchants exist.
