Über Mermaid
Diagramme liegen meist als Bilder vor, was sie für alle unsichtbar macht, die untersuchen, wie eine Seite gebaut wurde. Mermaid macht es umgekehrt. Die Bibliothek nimmt einen Textblock, der ein Flussdiagramm, ein Sequenzdiagramm, ein Gantt-Diagramm oder ein Entity-Relationship-Modell beschreibt, und zeichnet daraus beim Laden das Diagramm im Browser. Das Diagramm ist also Code, und der Code steht in der Seite.
Das Projekt erschien im Jahr 2014 unter der Lizenz MIT, ist in JavaScript geschrieben und verbreitete sich eher über Entwicklerwerkzeuge als über das Webdesign. Dokumentationsgeneratoren, Frameworks für statische Websites, Wikis und Wissensdatenbanken haben die Bibliothek übernommen, weil ein als Text geschriebenes Diagramm in einem Repository liegen, zusammen mit einer Codeänderung geprüft werden und mit der Software, die es beschreibt, aktuell bleiben kann. Wer sie öffentlich rendert, veröffentlicht fast immer technische Dokumentation.
Eine solche Präzision ist bei der Frontend-Erkennung ungewöhnlich. Die meisten Bibliotheken tauchen auf Websites jeder Art auf und verraten wenig über das Publikum, doch dieser Eintrag in der Kategorie JavaScript graphics markiert ein bestimmtes: Portale für Entwicklerdokumentation, API-Referenzen, nach außen veröffentlichte interne Handbücher, Websites von Open-Source-Projekten, Entwicklerblogs und Kursmaterial. Eine Liste der Seiten mit Mermaid kommt einer Liste der Organisationen nahe, die Dokumentation so ernsthaft schreiben, dass sie darin ihre Architektur zeichnen.
Genau diese Abgrenzung suchen gleich mehrere Zielgruppen. Anbieter von Entwicklerwerkzeugen finden damit Produkte, deren Nutzer Entwickler sind und keine Marketer. Stand Oktober 2026 erkennen wir die Bibliothek auf 1.733 Websites, und zu dieser Zahl gehört ein Vorbehalt. Die Erkennung setzt voraus, dass das Rendering-Skript in der Seite steht, die wir abrufen. Plattformen, die Diagramme serverseitig rendern, die Bibliothek in eine größere Anwendungsdatei bündeln oder sie nur auf den Seiten laden, die tatsächlich ein Diagramm enthalten, werden nur unvollständig gezählt, und Dokumentation hinter einem Login bleibt ganz außer Reichweite. Der erfasste Bestand ist der offen veröffentlichte Teil einer größeren installierten Basis.
Was der Download gegenüber der Prüfung einzelner Domains hinzufügt, ist die Struktur dieses Bestands. Eine Einzelabfrage bestätigt eine Website.
