Cloudflare ist ein amerikanisches Connectivity-Cloud-Unternehmen, gegründet 2009, das sich als Reverse-Proxy vor eine Website schaltet: Der Besucherverkehr wird über das Edge-Netzwerk von Cloudflare geleitet, das Rechenzentren in mehr als 300 Städten weltweit umfasst, bevor er den Ursprungsserver erreicht. Von dieser Position aus liefert Cloudflare ein Content Delivery Network (CDN) mit Edge-Caching, autoritativem DNS, DDoS-Abwehr, einer Web Application Firewall (WAF), TLS-Terminierung und Bot-Management. Die weit verbreitete kostenlose Stufe, die Aktivierung mit einem Klick über die Nameserver einer Domain und die charakteristischen Antwort-Header (etwa die Felder server: cloudflare und cf-ray) haben Cloudflare zu einem der am häufigsten anzutreffenden Infrastrukturbausteine im öffentlichen Web gemacht. Genau deshalb ist die Erkennung von Websites, die Cloudflare im großen Maßstab nutzen, ein nicht triviales Erkennungsproblem und keine einfache Abfrage.
webatla pflegt einen fortlaufend aktualisierten Index von Websites, die Cloudflare einsetzen. Er beruht ausschließlich auf Live-Signalen (DNS-Einträge, HTTP-Antwort-Header sowie IP- und ASN-Fingerabdrücke aus dem Adressraum von Cloudflare) und nicht auf selbst gemeldeten Angaben, sodass eine Domain nur so lange gelistet ist, wie die Belege aktuell sind. Da der Edge-Proxy den tatsächlichen Ursprung einer Website verdeckt, ist dies für sich genommen eine anspruchsvolle Erkennungsaufgabe, und der Index wird neu abgeleitet, sobald Domains in das Netzwerk aufgenommen werden oder es verlassen. Der Datensatz lässt sich als tägliche JSONL-Datei mit einem strukturierten Eintrag pro Domain herunterladen, und auf dieser Seite steht eine kostenlose Vorschau vor dem vollständigen kostenpflichtigen Export bereit.
