About TwistedWeb
The web part of this software is a side door. Twisted was built as a general networking toolkit, with mail, chat, name service and remote shell implementations sitting beside the HTTP one, so a host answering with the web banner is not always serving a website. The banner is also the whole of our evidence about TwistedWeb, and it can be edited, shortened or removed outright, while any reverse proxy or CDN in front of the application will usually replace it with one of its own. Every figure below should be read with that in mind.
TwistedWeb is the HTTP layer of the Twisted asynchronous networking framework for Python, released by Twisted Matrix Labs under MIT from 2002. Choosing it is a deliberate engineering decision rather than a default. Nobody arrives at an event driven Python server by installing a website builder, which means the domains answering with it are rarely ordinary marketing sites. Filed under Web servers, the software turns up in front of internal tools, API endpoints, device and appliance interfaces, research and infrastructure projects, and long lived services built when the framework was a common answer to concurrency.
As of October 2026 the framework answers on 179 domains. Server software counts behave differently from application counts, because one host can serve many names and one name can sit in front of many hosts, so the figure describes reachable endpoints rather than installations.
Version reporting is the part worth mining. Across the banners that include a release we record 13 distinct strings, and the release returned more often than any other is 20.3.0. A framework of this age accumulating that many live versions says something plain about how it gets used. The software is embedded in systems deployed once and updated rarely, and the running release is often whatever the operating system packaged on the day the machine was built.
The audience for a list like this is specific. Security researchers scope exposure across an ageing asynchronous stack. Infrastructure and platform vendors size Python server deployments they cannot see from package downloads.
