About TownNews
Local news publishing is a market small enough that a handful of platforms carry most of it, and TownNews was built for that market alone. The product is not a general purpose CMS that a newsroom happened to choose. Everything in it, the paywall, the newsletter tooling, the advertising management, the editorial workflow, assumes a publication with a print heritage, a subscriber file and an ad sales team.
The company we record as BLOX Digital now trades as BLOX Digital, and it has shipped the platform since 2000, written in PHP and sold as Proprietary software with hosting attached, which puts it among the things a media group buys once and then lives with for a decade. Newsroom software gets replaced slowly, because a migration means moving archives, redirect maps, subscriber records and ad contracts at the same time, and every one of those has someone who will object. A domain carrying the tag is a sign of an ongoing commercial relationship rather than a trial.
