About Texthelp
An accessibility toolbar is one of the few things on a web page put there for a legal reason at least as often as a commercial one. Texthelp sells into that reason. The company's web-facing product adds reading support to a site for the visitors who need it, with text read aloud, translation and adjustable presentation, and without asking the visitor to install anything of their own.
Our record dates the software to 1996 and credits Everway. A first release that early places the product well behind most of what a modern technology scan turns up, and it has outlived several generations of the platforms carrying it as well as a change of name at the company selling it. We file it under Accessibility, which is an honest admission rather than a judgement. Assistive technology does not fit the categories a commercial technology index is organised around, and the classification says more about the index than about the software.
A site carrying this JavaScript script is usually not a shop. Toolbars of this kind concentrate in government, education, health services and the organisations that contract to them, because those bodies have a statutory duty and a procurement process built to discharge it.
