About Snowplow Analytics

An analytics tag usually records a marketing decision. Snowplow records an engineering one. The platform does not hand a dashboard to a growth team, it collects granular event data, validates it against schemas the customer defines, and lands it in a warehouse the customer owns, Redshift or BigQuery or Snowflake, where it becomes somebody's modelling job.

Written in Scala, published under Apache 2.0 and shipped since 2012 by Snowplow, Snowplow Analytics is filed here under Analytics, though the products it competes with are as often data pipelines as analytics suites. The implication of finding Snowplow on a site is unusually strong. A site running it has a warehouse, has people who write schemas, and has decided that owning raw behavioural data is worth the operating cost of a collection pipeline. Companies at that stage buy things, reverse ETL, transformation tooling, identity resolution, experimentation platforms, data quality monitoring, and consultants who can staff the work. Few detectable front end technologies qualify a buyer that precisely.

Detection carries a real caveat here, and the caveat cuts against us. Snowplow deployments routinely serve the tracker and the collector from first party subdomains under the customer's own name, which is the entire point of a first party pipeline, and self hosted installations can rename the script freely. We identify the tracker by its own signature rather than by a vendor hostname, which catches the common cases, but any figure for an open source platform designed to be unobtrusive should be read as a floor. Server side and mobile collection leaves no trace in a page at all.

Which is also why the list is worth having as a file rather than as a lookup. One domain checked in isolation tells you nothing about whether warehouse first analytics is spreading in a sector, which countries and suffixes the adopters cluster in, or which of them also run the adjacent tooling your product replaces. A full extract lets you build the segment, hold it against the wider analytics population, and work the difference. It also lets you watch the boundary, since the interesting companies are usually the ones running a warehouse pipeline alongside a conventional tag, in the months before one of the two gets switched off.
