A publisher installs Skimlinks for one reason, which is revenue from links it was going to publish anyway. The service rewrites ordinary outbound retailer links inside editorial copy into tracked affiliate links as the page loads, so writers keep linking normally and the commercial layer is applied for them. Detecting the JavaScript loader on a site is therefore a commercial signal rather than a technical one. Somebody looked at the outbound traffic going to merchants and decided it was worth monetizing.

Sites that reach that decision tend to share a shape. Product roundups, reviews and buying guides, deal coverage, recipes with equipment links, hobby and enthusiast publications, and the commerce desks attached to larger news brands. Merchant partner teams, competing networks, and analysts tracking where publisher revenue has migrated all need the population with domains attached rather than a lookup per site. Affiliate relationships are private by nature, and no participant publishes its roster. Link rewriting is the part of that economy that has to run in the browser to work, which makes it one of the few observable traces of who is monetizing commerce content and at what breadth.
