About Newspack

Newspack is not a general purpose WordPress plugins, and the sites running it are not a general purpose sample of the web. Newspack is a PHP publishing stack maintained by Automattic and released under the GPL v2 license, assembled from a widely used blogging core plus a curated set of extensions aimed squarely at newsrooms, with a lineage that starts in 2019. As of September 2026 we detect Newspack on 422 sites.

The consequence is that the detected set behaves less like a technology footprint and more like a directory of a single industry. Newsroom software is bought by newsrooms, and by smaller ones in particular, since large publishers tend to build or commission something bespoke. A list of Newspack sites is therefore a list of independent and local news publishers that have already committed to a shared platform, which is a segment that is otherwise very hard to enumerate. No registry of local news outlets stays current for long, and the ones that exist go stale as titles fold, merge and relaunch. A crawl of live sites does not go stale in the same way, because a publication that stops publishing eventually stops resolving.

Detection carries an inference that should be stated rather than buried. Newspack sits on top of a general purpose blogging platform, so anything we identify as Newspack is also running that underlying system, and the markers we read come from theme and plugin assets that a deeply customised install can rename or bundle out of sight. Publishers fronting their sites with an aggressive edge cache can hide the same markers. Our count is what stays visible from outside, which makes it a lower bound on the real deployment rather than a total.

The buyers of a list like this are mostly not selling a rival WordPress plugins. Advertising networks, reader revenue and subscription vendors, newsletter platforms, comment and moderation services, syndication buyers and audience analytics providers all need the same underlying thing, namely the set of independent publishers that can be reached at scale and that have already shown they will adopt shared tooling. Media researchers ask a different question of the same data, tracking whether local news capacity in a region is growing or contracting, and a platform footprint measured the same way at every refresh is one of the few consistent proxies available for that. Neither group can work a domain at a time. The whole population is the unit of analysis, and a downloadable list is the only practical way to hold it.
