About Mollom

Before machine-generated text became everybody's problem, the specific problem was comment spam, and the sites drowning in it were the ones that let readers post. Mollom was built for that fight, as a hosted classifier a site handed each submission to and got back a verdict on: accept, challenge or discard. The integration lived as a PHP module inside the publishing system, and the module is the part still visible from outside.

The service behind it no longer accepts traffic. Acquia acquired the product and later retired it, so the fingerprints we record are integration code that outlived the endpoint it was written to call. The retirement changes what this column means. A live anti-spam vendor tells you what a site chose. A dead one tells you roughly when a site stopped choosing anything.

Sold on Proprietary terms from 2008, the service was closely tied to one publishing ecosystem, which shaped both who adopted it and who still carries it. Modules in that ecosystem are rarely removed by an upgrade, they are disabled or simply left in place, so a page still advertising the hook usually belongs to an owner who has not opened the module list in years. For anyone assessing a portfolio of sites that is a maintenance indicator with an approximate date on it, and neglect of that kind correlates with the things nobody wants to find later: unpatched contributed code, an end-of-life core release, a form endpoint pointing at nothing.

Pulling the population answers a research question instead: how long dead infrastructure survives on the open web, which hosting providers and which country markets carry more of it than their size would suggest, and whether abandonment clusters by platform generation or by geography.
