About ModiFace
Before anyone buys lipstick without a mirror, something has to take the mirror's place. ModiFace is the layer that does it, a camera driven try-on that maps a face in the browser and paints a product onto it while the shopper moves. The technology dates in our records to 2007 and now belongs to L'Oréal, licensed as Proprietary and placed on retail pages by agreement rather than picked up from a public registry.
Ownership by a beauty manufacturer is the part worth pausing on. A try-on widget owned by a manufacturer shows up on the sites of that manufacturer's brands, its retail partners and the stores that carry its products, so a match traces a commercial relationship rather than an independent decision made by a webmaster.
