An ecommerce platform detection is a statement about money. A shop is a business system rather than a brochure, and replacing one costs a merchant its checkout, its catalogue, its integrations and usually a good part of somebody's year.

Magento has carried that weight since 2008. Written in PHP and published by Adobe in an Open Source edition alongside a commercial one, the platform became the default choice for merchants who wanted to own their stack rather than rent it. As of September 2026 we detect it on 110,946 sites, which are the shops that took the harder route and stayed on it.

The version picture here is deliberately coarse. We record 3 distinct version values, and 2 covers the current generation, because what the platform discloses in public is a major line rather than a point release. Coarse as it is, the split matters more than a precise figure would, because the break between the two generations was not an upgrade. The rewrite required a migration project, and the earlier line stopped receiving security fixes on a fixed date. A shop still on the old generation is running unpatched commerce software, and its operator either knows and cannot afford the project or has stopped paying attention.

One distinction of that kind defines several markets at once. Agencies sell migrations into it. Competing hosted platforms sell escape from it. Security vendors and payment processors need to know which merchants are handling cards on an unsupported base. Extension developers need to know how large the addressable base on the current generation actually is before committing to a build.

United States accounts for 75,121 of the detections and the .com zone carries the bulk of the remainder, a concentration reflecting where enterprise retail sits rather than where the software is written or supported. Merchants of this size register commercially and host near their customers, so country and zone behave as market indicators here and not as language ones.

There is one limit that matters more than the others. The open edition and the commercial edition share a codebase and present almost identically to a crawler, so the list mixes self-hosted merchants with enterprise customers paying a licence, and no reliable public marker separates them. Anyone sizing a budget from this population should treat it as a superset and qualify the rows with something else, such as catalogue depth, payment provider or delivery network, all of which travel on the same row in the export.

What the file answers is a fleet question rather than a shop question. Every domain we detect the platform on, with the generation we observed, the country, the zone and the rest of the technologies fingerprinted on the same site, rebuilt daily, so that movement off the old line appears as a difference between two copies of the data rather than as a rumour at a conference.
