About Mastodon
Somebody pays a hosting bill for every server in this population, and somebody moderates it. Each detection is an instance that a person or an organisation chose to run on behalf of other people, which makes the row a piece of infrastructure rather than a page.
Mastodon is federated social networking software written in Ruby and released under AGPL v3. The licence is part of why the network holds its shape. A network copyleft obliges anyone who modifies the software and runs it as a service to publish those modifications, which keeps independently operated servers speaking the same protocol instead of drifting apart into private forks that no longer federate.
Mastodon has been available since 2016, and the server population has grown in bursts tied to the troubles of the centralised platforms it substitutes for. A list of domains running the software is therefore a map of the federated network's infrastructure and not a census of its users. Researchers studying decentralised platforms, trust and safety teams tracing where content originates, and companies building tools for the fediverse all need that map, and none of them can assemble it by checking one domain at a time.
As of October 2026 we detect Mastodon on 1,005 sites. The count covers hostnames that expose a recognisable server, so it misses instances hidden behind an unusual proxy, instances running a heavily customised front end, and instances closed to unauthenticated visitors entirely. A server hosting a single account is counted exactly like a server hosting a large community, because a crawler sees the software and not the membership.
For anyone building on the fediverse, the value of the export is that server population, deduplicated and dated, next to whatever else those hosts run. Instance operators choose their own hosting, their own web server, their own certificate provider and their own object storage, and reading those choices across the entire set describes how the network is really maintained far better than any single instance can.
