Über Mastodon

Für jeden Server in diesem Bestand bezahlt jemand eine Hosting-Rechnung, und jemand moderiert ihn. Jede Erkennung steht für eine Instanz, die eine Person oder eine Organisation aus eigener Entscheidung für andere Menschen betreibt, was die Zeile zu einem Stück Infrastruktur macht und nicht zu einer bloßen Seite.

Mastodon ist eine föderierte Software für soziale Netzwerke, in Ruby geschrieben und unter der Lizenz AGPL v3 veröffentlicht, und die Lizenz ist mit ein Grund dafür, dass das Netzwerk zusammenhält. Ein Netzwerk-Copyleft verpflichtet jeden, der die Software verändert und als Dienst betreibt, diese Änderungen zu veröffentlichen, was dafür sorgt, dass unabhängig betriebene Server dasselbe Protokoll sprechen, statt in private Forks auseinanderzudriften, die nicht mehr miteinander föderieren.

Mastodon ist seit 2016 verfügbar, und der Bestand an Servern ist schubweise gewachsen, jeweils im Zusammenhang mit den Schwierigkeiten der zentralisierten Plattformen, zu denen es eine Alternative bietet.
