Chaque détection est une instance qu’une personne ou une organisation a choisi de faire tourner pour le compte d’autres personnes, ce qui fait de la ligne un élément d’infrastructure plutôt qu’une page.
Mastodon est un logiciel de réseau social fédéré écrit en Ruby et publié sous licence AGPL v3. La licence fait partie de ce qui maintient la forme du réseau. Un copyleft de réseau oblige quiconque modifie le logiciel et l’exploite comme un service à publier ces modifications, ce qui garde les serveurs exploités indépendamment dans le même protocole au lieu de les laisser dériver vers des forks privés qui ne fédèrent plus.
Mastodon est disponible depuis 2016, et la population de serveurs a crû par à-coups, liés aux déboires des plateformes centralisées auxquelles il se substitue.
