O Mastodon é software de rede social federada escrito em Ruby e distribuído com licença AGPL v3. A licença é parte da razão pela qual a rede mantém a sua forma. Um copyleft de rede obriga quem modifica o software e o corre como serviço a publicar essas modificações, o que mantém servidores operados de forma independente a falar o mesmo protocolo em vez de se afastarem em ramos privados que já não federam.

O Mastodon está disponível desde 2016, e a população de servidores cresceu aos saltos, sempre em função dos problemas das plataformas centralizadas que substitui. É reexportada diariamente, por isso pode voltar a descarregar a lista mais recente a qualquer momento dentro do seu período de acesso. Cada linha contém o domínio, além do DNS, WHOIS, IP, país de alojamento e classificação.
