About Marketo

A marketing automation platform cannot hide. The forms it renders, the tracking script it drops on every page and the hosted endpoints its submissions travel to all have to be present in the page source before the product does anything useful at all, which is what makes a tool sold to corporate marketing departments countable from the outside.

Marketo belongs to the Marketing automation group and has been through a full corporate lifecycle. Released in 2006 as an independent product, it is now sold by Adobe under a Proprietary licence and packaged inside a much broader suite of content, analytics and commerce tooling. Ownership is not trivia in this case. When a domain carries the tag, the buying relationship behind it is usually a negotiated contract rather than a card payment, and the same customer becomes a plausible candidate for the rest of the vendor catalogue.

Presence therefore says something about the organisation, not only about the website. A company running the platform generally has a marketing operations function, a CRM the platform writes into, a lead scoring model that somebody maintains, and a budget line that recurs every year. For a researcher the tag works as a proxy for company maturity and spend in a way that a font library or a compression setting never does.

As of September 2026 the dataset records Marketo on 176 sites. Counts for enterprise software read differently from counts for consumer plugins. A customer with thousands of employees still appears as one domain, while the audience reached through that domain can be very large. Detection also has a known blind spot: installations routed through a tag manager, or served from a subdomain the customer configured on its own DNS, can hide the fingerprint we match on. The figure is best treated as a floor rather than a census.

Version data adds a second dimension. We record 8 distinct version strings across the installed base, and the value we see most often is 154. Markers of this kind are not release numbers a site owner picks. Markers reflect what the vendor was generating when the snippet was pasted into the template, so an unusual value often points at an embed that nobody has revisited since the campaign it was built for ended.

The question the downloadable list answers is not whether a particular company uses the platform. A single lookup answers that in a second. The list answers the inverse question: given the platform, which domains are attached to it, in which countries and industries, on what hosting, alongside which other tools, and how does the population shift between snapshots. Competitive analysts sizing a martech segment, agencies building a migration pipeline and vendors qualifying outbound accounts all need the population rather than the individual record, and assembling that population by hand from per-domain lookups is not practical at this scale.
