About jPlayer

Web pages that play their own audio and video are a small and distinctive minority, and the tooling they use ages in a very visible way. jPlayer appeared in 2009, when playing a media file reliably meant wrapping the browser's own support in a plugin based fallback, and it gave developers one JavaScript interface that behaved the same everywhere. As of September 2026 we detect it on 52,739 sites.

The surviving installs cluster into a few recognisable kinds of site. Radio stations and podcast pages, music and sample libraries, language learning and religious sites, video galleries and product pages with media demos all had a reason to embed a player rather than link to a file. Because the MIT licence made copying it into a theme trivial, a large part of the footprint arrived indirectly, inside a purchased template or a plugin, rather than through a deliberate choice by the site owner.

For a researcher the field works in two directions. Seen one way it identifies sites that publish audio or video, a population that is hard to isolate otherwise and a useful one for anyone selling hosting, transcription, rights management, advertising or analytics for media. Seen the other way it identifies sites that have not touched their front end since browser media support settled, because native playback removed the original reason to load a library at all. A domain still serving it is telling you both things at once.

Each reading depends on detection that is inferential. The player is recognised from its script name and the markup conventions it expects, so an install that has been renamed, bundled or wrapped by a page builder can pass unnoticed, and a player embedded only on a subpage will be missed by any crawl that sees the front page. United States accounts for 16,723 of the detections and the .com suffix runs through the list, which reflects where the templates carrying it were sold more than where media publishing actually happens.
