About Jimdo
A hosted website builder leaves two traces of its customer, and on Jimdo the two point at different countries. Understanding why is the difference between building a useful list and a misleading one.
The first trace is infrastructure. Pages built with the product are served by Jimdo GmbH rather than by the person who made them, so the address a crawler resolves belongs to the platform. As of September 2026 we detect Jimdo on 287,109 sites, and 260,918 of those resolve to United States. Resolved location on a hosted builder describes where the platform rents capacity, not where its customers sit.
The second trace is the domain, and a domain is bought by the site owner. The suffix running through this population is .de, which matches the market the product grew up in. Jimdo GmbH started in Hamburg in 2007 and sold into German small business long before it sold anywhere else, and registration behaviour still carries that history even though the serving infrastructure no longer shows it. For anyone assembling a list of German small businesses with a live site, the suffix column is the one to filter on and the resolved country column is the one to ignore.
One more thing the domain column carries is a rough grade of commitment. Builders hand out a platform subdomain on the free tier and attach a real registered name once a customer pays, so the shape of a site's address is a partial proxy for whether anybody is spending. Grading a population that way is imprecise and should be treated as such, but it separates hobby pages from trading businesses far better than a raw platform count does.
What the label implies about a business is consistent enough to be useful. A builder in the CMS class replaces a developer rather than assisting one, so a detection usually means a company with no engineering function, no separate content system, and a site that one person edits between other jobs. Proprietary licensing means there is no self-hosted edition and no fork, so every detection corresponds to an account with the vendor rather than to a copy of some software someone downloaded. Agencies selling redesigns, payment and booking tools aimed at owner-operators, and hosting companies pitching an upgrade path all end up wanting the same population.
The limits are worth stating. Detection identifies the platform, not the plan, so a paying customer with a custom domain and a dormant free page look alike in the data. Nor does presence prove the business behind the page is trading. A per-domain lookup answers whether one company built on the platform. A downloadable list answers the questions that only exist at population scale: how many of these sites carry a German suffix, which of them also run a shop, and which segments still have an owner-operator behind them rather than an agency.
