About EmbedPlus

Embedding a video is a solved problem, so a site that installs a plugin to do it is telling you the default was not enough. EmbedPlus exists for publishers who wanted more control over an embedded player than a pasted iframe gives them.

The plugin wraps video embeds and adds behaviour around them: chapters, playback and privacy options, suppression of related videos, lazy loading, galleries and channel feeds. The license is Freemium, with a free tier in the WordPress directory and paid upgrades behind it, written in PHP and published by EmbedPlus since 2011. Nothing about that stack is technically remarkable, which is the point. The interesting part is what a site has to be doing before installing it makes sense.

Presence speaks to content strategy rather than engineering. Somebody publishes enough video that the default embed became a nuisance, and cared enough to install and configure a tool to fix it. Sites in that condition are content operations: tutorial blogs, course sites, review publishers, church and school media, hobby communities and small media brands. Advertising and sponsorship networks, video hosting and delivery vendors, membership and paywall products, SEO tooling and course platforms all sell into that profile, and a video-heavy publisher is a far narrower and better qualified target than a WordPress site.

The version data is the practical part of this record. We observe 382 distinct releases in the wild, and the one recorded on more sites than any other is 14.2.6. A plugin that wraps a third-party player has to keep pace with changes on the other side of the embed, so an install left on an old release is a plausible source of quietly broken video on pages nobody has looked at in years.

As of September 2026 we detect the plugin on 71,657 sites. 31,694 of them resolve to United States, and .com carries more than any other suffix, which reflects both where English-language publishing concentrates and where our country resolution is most confident.

Detection only sees the plugin when it renders. We match the scripts and markup injected around a player, so an install that is active but has no video on the page we crawled leaves no trace at all. The count should be read as sites where we saw a player, not sites where the plugin is installed, and caching or script-combining plugins strip the version evidence in the same way.

A per-domain lookup confirms one publisher. The download answers the aggregate questions instead. How many publishers of this kind exist, which release each of them runs, how they divide by country and suffix, and which of them also run an ad stack, a membership plugin or an analytics product you compete with. No amount of checking domains one at a time builds that picture.
