About Bugzilla

Bugzilla is not a website technology in the way a CMS or an analytics tag is. Nobody builds a public website on a bug tracker. A Bugzilla instance on a reachable domain is an internal engineering tool that happens to be exposed to the internet, usually on a subdomain, sometimes deliberately because the project wants outside bug reports and sometimes because nobody ever put it behind a login. As of October 2026 we detect Bugzilla on 319 sites.

What that means for a researcher is unusual. Most technology lists tell you what an organisation sells or how it markets. A bug tracker tells you that the organisation writes software, has a process for tracking defects, and chose to run that process on its own infrastructure rather than on a hosted service. Finding a public instance is a fairly reliable way to identify companies, universities, distributions and open projects with real in house development teams, and no marketing technology signal isolates that population.

The age of the software shapes who is left running it. Bugzilla was first released in 1998 and is written in Perl, and hosted issue trackers have absorbed much of the new adoption since. An organisation still running it today has usually been running it for a long time, with years of issue history that would be painful to migrate. Continuity rather than novelty is what this signal captures.

Version data supports that reading. We record 3 distinct versions across the instances where a version is readable, a narrow spread compared with software that ships frequently, and the version we see most often is 5.0.6. A tight cluster around a handful of releases is what you would expect from a mature codebase installed once and then left alone, and the tightness makes the security question easy to frame. When an advisory lands against a specific release, the practical question is which public instances are running it, and a list of hostnames with versions attached answers that in a single pass instead of one lookup per domain.

Licensing matters for the same reason it does with any self hosted tool. Bugzilla is released under the MPL by the Mozilla Foundation, so there is no purchase record, no customer list and no vendor telemetry to consult. Every install is somebody downloading source and running it, which leaves the live web as the only place the deployment footprint is visible.

Read the count with two limits in mind. An instance behind a VPN or on an internal hostname is invisible to any crawler, and internal deployment is the normal case for a bug tracker, so the public figure is a small and self selecting slice of real usage.
