About Amex Express Checkout

Card networks spent years trying to own the checkout button itself and not merely the transaction behind it, and Amex Express Checkout was American Express's entry into that contest. When the button appears on a storefront, the merchant is telling you three things at once: that it accepts the network's cards, that it wanted returning shoppers to skip the card form, and that it was willing to put a third party's script into the most sensitive step of the funnel. All three are commercial signals about the seller, which is why Payment processors fingerprints get read as much for what they say about the site owner as for what they say about the software.

As of September 2026 we detect Amex Express Checkout on 9 sites. A footprint that small invites a conclusion, and there are at least two explanations we cannot separate from the outside. One is genuinely limited adoption among merchants. The other is code left in place after a merchant stopped promoting the option, because an unused button rarely gets removed from a template. Our crawler sees the integration, not whether a shopper could still complete a payment through it, and the honest reading of the number keeps both possibilities open.

The integration is delivered in JavaScript, which is the only reason detection is possible at all. Payment plumbing that runs server to server between a merchant and an acquirer leaves nothing in the page for a crawler to find, so any technology census of payments is structurally biased toward the client-side layer. Buttons, wallets and hosted fields are countable. Gateways, acquiring relationships and settlement arrangements mostly are not, and a reader comparing our payment counts against industry volume figures should keep that asymmetry in mind.

American Express keeps the product Proprietary, so there is no self-hosted or forked variant drifting around under the same fingerprint, and a match means an integration the vendor sanctioned. For anyone selling payment services the value of the export is the joined view. The domains carrying this button can be crossed against the ecommerce platform beneath them, the other wallets present, the country of the site and its top-level domain, which turns a single checkout signal into a description of the merchant. Checking one storefront at a time will never produce that table, and it will never show which merchants dropped the button between two exports.
