Kommentare sind der Teil einer Website, den Betreiber am häufigsten nicht selbst bauen wollen. Disqus hat aus dieser Entscheidung ein Skript-Tag gemacht. Ein Code-Schnipsel im Seiten-Template genügt, und Diskussionsverlauf, Moderationswarteschlange, Spamfilter und Leser-Login kommen von anderswo, gehostet und gepflegt von einem Unternehmen, zu dem der Website-Betreiber sonst keine Beziehung hat.
Worin dieser Tausch besteht, zeigt sich daran, wem der Dienst gehört. Disqus gehört heute zum Unternehmen Zeta Global, dessen Geschäft aus Marketingdaten und Zielgruppen-Targeting besteht und nicht aus Publishing-Tools, was unmissverständlich zeigt, welchen Wert ein Kommentar-Widget für denjenigen hat, der es hostet. Eine Website, die Disqus einbindet, hat ein Skript eines Drittanbieters akzeptiert, durch das auf jeder Artikelseite Identität und Verhalten der Leser fließen. Für Datenschutzforscher oder ein Compliance-Team, das ein Verzeichnis seiner Anbieter erstellt, zählt die Platzierung dieses Skripts mehr als die Liste der Funktionen drumherum.
Disqus stammt aus dem Jahr 2007, wird als JavaScript in die einbindende Seite geladen und läuft nach dem Lizenzmodell Freemium, bei dem die kostenlose Stufe mit Werbung im Kommentarbereich bezahlt wird.
