About YaBB
A forum that keeps its threads in flat files instead of a database belongs to an era when shared hosting gave you a CGI directory and very little else, and YaBB was built for exactly that constraint. Installing it meant uploading scripts and setting file permissions, with no database to provision and no administrator to ask, which is why hobbyist communities took to it. The design that made it easy to install is the same design that made it hard to scale, and the platforms that displaced it all assumed a database was available.
The project dates to 2000 and is written in Perl, and both facts matter more for interpretation than for nostalgia. A site still serving a Perl forum through CGI today is a site that has not been rebuilt in a long time. The board is likely to be running on an old interpreter, on old hosting, with old code paths handling text submitted by strangers, and the community using it is likely to be small and long established. Detection here is a signal about the age and maintenance state of the whole property rather than about the forum software alone.
Our catalogue files the software under Message boards, which is a loose fit. Forum packages manage discussions rather than pages, and grouping them with general content management systems hides most of what the fingerprint says about a site. Anyone studying how the web ages, anyone looking for unmaintained software still exposed to the public internet, and anyone hunting for dormant communities attached to aged domains ends up wanting the same list for different reasons.
