About VuFind
Library catalogues were among the last public search interfaces to behave like search engines, and VuFind was written to close that gap. A discovery layer sits in front of the catalogue and the article databases, gives readers faceted search and relevance ordering over records designed for trained cataloguers, and hides the older system underneath instead of replacing it.
The maintainer recorded for this entry is Open Library Foundation, and the project's own site widens that picture. Development and maintenance sit with an international community of contributors, supported by the Open Library Foundation and by sponsoring institutions, among them the university in our record. Help reaches libraries through public mailing lists and through registered service providers who pay an annual fee into the project, and the code stays under GPL v2 terms so a library with a developer can adapt it without asking anyone's permission. Our records date the entry to 2010 and give PHP as the implementation language, which places the product in the generation of library software built to be self hosted on ordinary infrastructure.

A discovery layer is not a general publishing system, and a library running one will almost always run something else for its actual website, so a detection identifies the catalogue front end rather than the institution's main web platform.
Undercounting is likely here for reasons specific to how libraries publish. Discovery interfaces are frequently mounted on a subdomain or a path belonging to the parent institution, sometimes behind an authentication proxy for off campus readers, and a crawl organised around registered domains will not reach every one of them. Our count should be read as installations visible from the public web rather than as a census of deployments.
The question the downloadable list answers is one a per domain lookup cannot touch. Checking a single library's site tells you what that library runs, which any librarian would have told you. The list tells you the shape of the installed base, how many institutions run the software at all, which versions they sit on, which country domains they cluster in, and which sites moved off it between data releases. For a competing vendor, a consortium planning shared infrastructure, or a researcher studying how public institutions choose software, the population is the object of study and a single lookup is not.
