About Timeplot

Timeplot is an open-source JavaScript widget developed as part of the SIMILE project at MIT, designed for creating interactive time-based visualizations on web pages. It allows developers to plot time-series data on a timeline with overlaid event markers, enabling users to explore how quantitative data changes in relation to specific events over time.

Timeplot was primarily used in academic, journalistic, and research contexts where visualizing temporal data alongside event narratives was valuable. It works in conjunction with other SIMILE widgets such as Timeline and Exhibit. While the project is no longer actively maintained, Timeplot remains available and is found on legacy sites and digital humanities projects that built visualizations during its period of active development in the mid-to-late 2000s.
