About Quick.Cart

Almost every shopping cart worth naming assumes a database sits behind it. Quick.Cart does not. Products, categories and orders live in flat files on disk, which means a store can be unpacked into cheap shared hosting and run without a database server, a control panel or anyone who knows what a migration is. The tradeoff is the one you would expect, simple to deploy and awkward to extend.

Released by Open Solution in 2006 and distributed as Open Source software, the cart belongs to a generation of PHP applications that a shop owner installed by hand and then left alone. Longevity of that kind produces a very particular population. The sites still carrying it are rarely new builds, and the ones that are new tend to be deliberate choices by owners who want a shop without a stack.

Version spread is where a self hosted cart becomes interesting to look at in bulk. Our version column records 8 distinct releases across the installed base, clustering on 6.7. For software that handles checkout and customer details, spread like that is the whole story. A shop several releases behind is often not a shop with an upgrade backlog, it is a shop nobody logs into any more, and the difference between those two readings is worth money to whoever is looking.

The absence of a database is not a footnote either, it decides what kind of shop this can be. Flat file storage caps catalogue size, makes concurrent orders awkward and rules out the inventory synchronisation that any warehouse or marketplace integration expects. A store running on it is therefore small by construction, run by its owner, and unlikely to be sitting behind an enterprise buying process. Sizing a market segment from this slug means sizing a long tail of independent merchants.

Detection is inferential and worth stating plainly. Quick.Cart exposes itself through recognisable paths, markup and file naming, so an owner who stripped the footer credit and renamed the admin directory drops out of the count, while abandoned installs on parked domains stay in it long after the shop stopped selling anything. As of October 2026 the count stands at 241 sites, which is evidence of what remains deployed rather than of what still trades.

Two audiences pull a list like this for opposite reasons. Security researchers and hosting providers want the population of an old PHP application that touches payment flows, sorted by version, because the subset that matters is the tail nobody has touched in years. Ecommerce vendors want the other end, shops still actively maintained on a platform with no clean path to modern payment and tax handling, because those are migrations waiting for a pitch. Neither set can be assembled through per domain lookups. Only a full export, with version, country and TLD in the same row as the slug, narrows a niche platform down to the handful of stores that are actually worth contacting.
