An affiliate tracker is a claim about a business model. FirstPromoter exists to attribute a signup to whoever sent it and to keep paying that referrer a share of what the customer goes on to spend, which only makes sense when the customer keeps spending. The tracker is often present only on landing and signup pages, some accounts serve it from their own subdomain so the request no longer names the vendor, and the affiliate portal itself usually lives on a separate hostname that a crawler may treat as a different property. Detection proves an integration is exposed to the browser, not that a program exists.

That gap is also why the list is worth having as a file rather than as a lookup. Nothing in domain registration records says a company sells software by subscription, and no public register lists which companies run partner programmes. A set of domains that carry referral tracking is a usable proxy for both, and it becomes sharper when combined with the other technologies on the same sites, since a domain running a referral tracker alongside a subscription payment provider is very likely the kind of company a researcher was trying to find in the first place.
