About DedeCMS
DedeCMS has been running websites since 2003, which is long enough for several distinct generations of sites to have been built on it, launched, forgotten and left online. Developed by Desdev Inc. and distributed under GPL v2, DedeCMS is a PHP CMS for news portals, corporate sites and community platforms, with a templating system, membership handling and commerce extensions that made it a default choice for a large part of the Chinese language web while the rest of the world was settling on other platforms.
Age of that kind produces a particular install base. Adoption of an open source publishing platform is front loaded and its removal is slow, so the visible population today mixes sites that are actively maintained with a much larger residue of installations that nobody has touched for years. The record is also relevant to security work, because a long lived CMS with a documented history of vulnerabilities and a habit of running unattended is exactly the combination that keeps old exploits productive. Detecting the platform on a domain is a genuine risk signal for anyone doing due diligence on a portfolio of sites.
The regional story deserves care. Our record for DedeCMS does not include a leading country or domain extension, so the familiar claim that the platform is an almost exclusively Chinese phenomenon is an assumption rather than something we can assert. The export carries country and domain extension columns for every detected site, which turns the assumption into a measurement.
