About BoldGrid

Every technology dataset contains a category of products that arrive with the hosting account rather than after a search. BoldGrid sits partly in that category. Built as a layer on top of WordPress and developed by InMotion Hosting, a hosting company, it reaches some sites through hosting partners that offer it inside an account and others through owners who download it and install it on whatever host they already have. A customer can accept a guided setup and end up running a builder, a theme framework and a plugin suite without ever having compared one against another.

Reading the population that way changes the questions worth asking. As of September 2026 we detect BoldGrid on 24,344 sites, and the group mixes accounts that were set up with the bundle already in place with owners who went and got it themselves. The software runs on any WordPress host, which the vendor states plainly as a selling point, so a site can carry the builder through a migration and out of the channel that first supplied it. What the list describes is a distribution channel and its overflow rather than a clean roster of one provider's customers.

The technical facts reinforce the point. The software is GPL v2 and written in PHP, inherited from the platform underneath it, so anyone can install it anywhere at no cost. Free editions and paid plans sit side by side in the vendor's own description of how the product is sold. Detection identifies the builder layer through theme and plugin markers in the delivered page, which means the content management system and the builder are counted as separate technologies on the same site. A researcher who wants the full stack should expect both to appear and should not treat the pair as duplication.

The practical audience is narrower than for a general purpose builder and easier to define. Plugin and service vendors selling to small business sites get a segment filtered by budget and by a shared way of building. Competing builders get a displacement list, though the incumbent may have come with the account or may have been chosen deliberately, and which of the two applies is worth establishing before the pitch. Rival hosting providers get visibility into what a competitor offers inside an account and how far that offer has travelled. Security researchers get a population that shares a default configuration, and a shared default is where a single flaw becomes a mass event.

The usual caveats apply. A builder can be deactivated while leaving traces in a template, and caching or optimisation plugins can rewrite the markup enough to hide it, so the count moves in both directions rather than only one. Checking a single domain confirms one install. The downloadable list is what lets you size the population, watch it move between hosts and understand a distribution channel that is invisible from any individual site.
