Un logiciel de listes de diffusion est une infrastructure de courrier, et une infrastructure de courrier ne laisse normalement rien qu’un robot d’exploration puisse lire. Mailman fait exception, car il livre une façade web : pages d’abonnement, pages d’information sur les listes, écrans d’administration et archives publiques, le tout servi sur le même port que le reste du site.

Comme l’interface web est la partie que nous pouvons voir, le décompte mesure quelque chose de plus étroit que le déploiement. Un serveur de listes dont les pages web sont fermées au public, réservées à un réseau interne ou placées derrière un mur d’authentification n’apparaît pas du tout. En octobre 2026 nous détectons Mailman sur 25 sites, et la lecture honnête consiste à y voir les hôtes qui publient ouvertement une interface de listes, autrement dit un sous-ensemble des installations et non un échantillon aléatoire.
