Informazioni su Mailman

Il software per mailing list è infrastruttura di posta, e l’infrastruttura di posta di norma non lascia nulla che un crawler web possa leggere. Mailman è un’eccezione, perché include una parte web: pagine di iscrizione, pagine informative delle liste, schermate di amministrazione e archivi pubblici, tutti serviti sulla stessa porta del resto del sito.

Poiché l’interfaccia web è la parte che possiamo vedere, il conteggio misura qualcosa di più ristretto dell’effettiva diffusione. Un server di liste le cui pagine web sono chiuse al pubblico, limitate a una rete interna o collocate dietro un sistema di autenticazione non compare affatto. A ottobre 2026 rileviamo Mailman su 83 siti, e la lettura onesta è che si tratta di host che pubblicano apertamente un’interfaccia delle liste, un sottoinsieme delle installazioni e non un loro campione casuale.

I nostri dati classificano il software nella categoria Email, un’etichetta poco calzante che conviene segnalare. Nella pratica il software gestisce liste di discussione, liste di annunci e la corrispondenza dei gruppi di lavoro di università, enti di normazione, progetti comunitari e istituzioni pubbliche. Un’organizzazione che lo usa ancora ha fatto una scelta: tenere le liste, gli archivi e i dati degli iscritti su hardware che controlla, e pagare l’amministrazione in tempo del personale anziché in abbonamento.

Il segnale riguarda quindi chi gestisce il servizio più che la posta. Un dominio che lo ospita di solito ha personale tecnico interno, gestisce in proprio anche altri servizi e conserva una corrispondenza abbastanza vecchia da rendere l’archivio un patrimonio a sé. I fornitori di liste in hosting in cerca di candidati alla migrazione, i ricercatori di sicurezza che verificano una superficie di amministrazione esposta e gli archivisti che esplorano la storia delle discussioni pubbliche vogliono tutti la stessa cosa da noi.

Vogliono un’enumerazione completa. Una ricerca per singolo dominio conferma un host che già si conosceva. La domanda che rende davvero è quali host, sull’intero web, pubblicano ancora un’interfaccia delle liste, e per rispondere servono i domini fin dall’inizio, in una forma che si possa filtrare, campionare e rivedere più avanti per capire che cosa si è spento nel frattempo.
