O software de listas de correio é infraestrutura de correio, e a infraestrutura de correio normalmente não deixa atrás de si nada que um rastreador da web consiga ler. O Mailman é uma exceção, porque traz consigo um lado web: páginas de subscrição, páginas de informação sobre as listas, ecrãs de administração e arquivos públicos, tudo servido na mesma porta que o resto do site.

Como a interface web é a parte que conseguimos ver, a contagem mede algo mais restrito do que a instalação real. Um servidor de listas cujas páginas web estejam fechadas ao público, limitadas a uma rede interna ou colocadas atrás de uma barreira de autenticação não aparece de todo. Em outubro de 2026 detetamos o Mailman em 25 sites, e a leitura honesta é a de anfitriões que publicam abertamente uma interface de listas, o que constitui um subconjunto das instalações e não uma amostra aleatória delas.

O nosso registo arquiva o software na categoria Email, e a etiqueta assenta mal, o que vale a pena assinalar. O que ele faz correr são listas de discussão, listas de anúncios e correspondência de grupos de trabalho para universidades, organismos de normalização, projetos comunitários e instituições públicas.
