L’Éthiopie est le deuxième pays le plus peuplé d’Afrique avec plus de 120 millions d’habitants, et son secteur internet connaît une transformation rapide à la suite d’une libéralisation limitée du marché ces dernières années. La pénétration d’internet reste relativement faible, à environ 24 %, freinée par la domination de l’opérateur public Ethio Telecom et par un investissement historiquement limité dans les infrastructures des zones rurales. La réforme du marché des télécommunications engagée par le gouvernement, notamment l’attribution d’une seconde licence à Safaricom Ethiopia, stimule de nouveaux investissements en infrastructure et une tarification concurrentielle qui devraient accélérer significativement la croissance de la connectivité.

L’extension .et est gérée par l’Ethiopian Internet Exchange and Communication Regulatory Authority et connaît des enregistrements limités mais en croissance. Addis-Abeba dispose d’une scène de startups technologiques en développement, avec des incubateurs et des accélérateurs soutenant des entrepreneurs dans la fintech, l’agritech et la health tech.
