About Misskey
The fediverse has a Japanese dialect, and Misskey speaks it. Running an instance means installing, hosting and moderating it yourself, so each domain in this set represents an operator rather than a customer, and the population as a whole maps volunteer and small scale infrastructure rather than a vendor's sales pipeline.
Our record carries no vendor for Misskey, which is accurate rather than missing. The project is community developed and published under the AGPL v3 licence, written in TypeScript, with a first release dated to 2014. A copyleft licence of that strength shapes who is willing to deploy the software, because anyone running a modified instance as a public service owes those modifications back to the people using it. Operators in this set have generally accepted that condition on purpose.
Detecting a federated server is more reliable than detecting a build tool, since the software serves its own front end and answers on predictable paths. The count still misses instances closed to registration, hidden behind an invitation, or served on host names a domain based crawl never reaches. As of October 2026 we see Misskey on 149 sites, and the real number of running instances is higher than that.
The useful property of the set is that every entry is an independent host with an administrator who makes their own infrastructure decisions. Trust and safety teams read it as a moderation surface, because federation means content originating on any instance can reach users on all the others.
A per-domain lookup will confirm that a given site runs the software, which is rarely the question anyone actually has. The question is the shape of the network: how many hosts, on which top level domains, with what else running on the same machine, and how the set moves between exports as instances appear, migrate to forks, or shut down without warning. Enumeration plus repetition is what makes that visible, and neither is available from checking domains one at a time.
