About Javadoc

A Java developer writes a block comment above a class, and years later that comment is a public web page with a stable URL. Javadoc is the tool that performs the translation, and the pages it leaves behind are the only reason a documentation generator appears in a survey of web technology at all.

Shipped with the Java Development Kit since 1995 and maintained by Oracle under the GPL v2 license, Javadoc reads specially marked comments out of Java source files and emits a set of cross linked HTML pages describing every class, method and field. The output has a recognisable skeleton: a fixed frame layout, a generator note in the page head, and a file naming scheme that has barely moved in the decades since. Detection keys on that skeleton and not on anything the visitor's browser executes, which makes a match dependable when it happens and blind when a project rehosts its documentation inside a custom theme.

As of October 2026 the count stands at 1 site in the Documentation group. A figure that small is not a measure of how much Java is written in the world. What the figure counts is hosts that publish generated API documentation on the open web under their own name, which is a much narrower and much more interesting population than Java shops in general.

Who a list like that serves is quite specific. A company self hosting Javadoc output is a company that ships a library, an SDK or a platform API to developers outside its own walls, and has decided the documentation is part of the product rather than an internal wiki page. Developer tool vendors, technical recruiters and anyone mapping the Java ecosystem by employer rather than by repository are all asking a question a per domain lookup cannot answer, because the question is not whether one known company publishes docs but which companies do at all.

The limits are worth stating plainly. Aggregators that host generated documentation for many unrelated projects register as a single host, so the population skews toward organisations that put docs on their own domain. And documentation living on an intranet, which is most of it, never enters a public crawl. The downloadable list is therefore a floor and a starting point, useful for the hosts it names rather than for the total it reports.

Frequently asked questions

How many websites use Javadoc?

webatla detects Javadoc on 1 website, refreshed daily, with its domain, DNS, WHOIS, IP, country and ranking.

Can I download the list of websites using Javadoc?

Yes, as structured JSONL. Grab a free sample first.

What's included for each site, and how fresh is it?

Domain, DNS, RDAP/WHOIS, the full technology stack, IP & country, PageRank and Harmonic, re-detected and re-exported daily.

How do I find the websites using Javadoc?

Buy the technology dataset, then download the complete list of domains we detect using Javadoc, re-exported every day.

What else is in the Javadoc technology data?

Each row places Javadoc next to the other technology on the same site, plus DNS, WHOIS, IP, country and ranking.

Can I download just the sites using Javadoc, or the whole database?

Both. Every site running Javadoc comes in the Technologies dataset, one downloadable file. Or buy All data for the entire database: technologies plus identity, ranking, DNS and RDAP/WHOIS for every domain, combined in one file. Daily fresh export.

How do I download the list of websites using Javadoc?

Three steps: (1) grab the free 10,000-row sample to inspect the schema, (2) buy the Technologies dataset, (3) download the full list of every domain we detect running Javadoc as a JSON Lines file. It is re-exported daily, so you can re-download the freshest list any time inside your access window. Each row carries the domain plus DNS, WHOIS, IP, hosting country and rank.
