About Highcharts

Charting libraries are usually a developer preference with no commercial weight attached to them. Highcharts is an exception, because using it in a commercial product requires a paid license. Free for personal and non commercial work, licensed per developer for anything else, the library turns a front end asset into a contractual question. Whoever put it on a page either bought a license or did not, and the page itself does not say which.

The pages where a charting library appears also indicate what kind of product sits behind them. Marketing sites do not plot data. This library tends to live inside dashboards, reporting screens, admin consoles and financial or scientific tools, so a detection is a workable proxy for a site with a real application behind it and users who log in. For anyone selling analytics infrastructure, embedded reporting or data engineering services, the proxy is more useful than the chart.

As of September 2026 we record the library on 20,334 sites. Detection depends on it being loaded from a recognizable file or leaving its signature in the served page, so an application that compiles it into one bundled JavaScript file often escapes notice, and bundled applications are exactly the environment the library was built for. The public web count is a lower bound and a biased one, over representing sites that link a vendor hosted script and under representing the built applications behind logins.

A library in circulation since 2009 accumulates installations from every stage of its own history, and version data is where the file becomes interesting. We attribute 12 distinct releases across the sites where a version can be read, and the release we see most frequently is 5.0.12, which is not a recent one. A pinned major version on a client side library usually means the license was bought once, the integration was written once, and nobody has revisited either since. For Highsoft, that pattern describes a renewal conversation. For a competitor, a migration target. For a security team, an asset that has not been updated in years and is served to every visitor.

The Commercial model is what makes this population both enumerable and worth enumerating. Anyone can open one page and see which chart library it loads. Nobody can answer, from a single lookup, how many sites in a given country or top level domain run a paid charting library, how many sit on old releases, or which of them pair it with frameworks the JavaScript ecosystem has since moved on from. An export answers those questions for the whole population at once, which is the only form in which a license audit, a displacement campaign or a market sizing exercise is actually possible.
