About Cxense

The name on the script and the name on the invoice stopped matching some time ago. Cxense was built by a Norwegian company as a data management and personalisation platform for publishers, and the product now belongs to Piano Software, which folded it into a wider analytics and subscription suite. Sites still serve assets under the original branding, because renaming a tag breaks integrations and nobody renames a tag for tidiness.

Inside the Personalisation category, the platform does audience work rather than traffic counting. The system builds behavioural segments from what readers actually consume, feeds recommendation and content discovery widgets, and passes those segments on to advertising and subscription decisions. Publishers who install it are trying to change what each individual reader sees, not to produce a monthly report.

A site that bought audience segmentation had a reason for it. Recommendation engines and paywall targeting are not entry level purchases, so the install base skews towards news organisations, magazine groups and content businesses with enough traffic for segmentation to pay for itself. The original company sold heavily into European publishing, and much of the deployed base reflects where those sales were made rather than where the product would be chosen today.

2010 is the date worth holding on to. A platform that launched then has since been through an acquisition, a rebrand and an entire generation of privacy regulation, and installations of that age are frequently inherited rather than chosen. Some are actively maintained by a team that knows exactly what the segments are used for. Others are dormant script tags on pages nobody has audited since the last redesign, still firing requests into a system that no longer sits at the centre of anyone's plan. A web dataset cannot tell those two states apart, and any serious use of this list should assume a mix of both.

The product is Proprietary, so each installation corresponds to a contract at some point, current or lapsed. As of September 2026 the tag is visible on 1,055 sites. For a competitor in analytics, personalisation or subscription tooling, a list of that kind reads as a migration map, showing publishers running a platform whose original vendor no longer exists independently, some already consolidated onto the acquirer's newer products and some not.
