Let’s Encrypt est une autorité de certification (CA) gratuite, automatisée et ouverte, qui délivre des certificats TLS/SSL aux sites web pour activer le HTTPS. Lancée en 2016 par l’Internet Security Research Group (ISRG) et soutenue par de grands sponsors, dont Mozilla, l’Electronic Frontier Foundation et Cisco, elle a considérablement abaissé la barrière à l’activation du trafic web chiffré.

Let’s Encrypt utilise le protocole ACME pour automatiser l’émission et le renouvellement des certificats, permettant aux administrateurs serveur et aux hébergeurs d’obtenir et de renouveler leurs certificats sans intervention manuelle. Elle a délivré des certificats à des centaines de millions de sites web, devenant la plus grande autorité de certification au monde en nombre de certificats. Le service est fourni entièrement gratuitement, en tant que bien public.
