Informazioni su Let's Encrypt

Quasi tutti i siti del web pubblico ormai funzionano in HTTPS, e una quota ampia di quei certificati proviene da Let's Encrypt. Non è questo ciò che dice il nostro conteggio. A ottobre 2026 registriamo l’autorità di certificazione su 49.511 siti, un numero che riguarda il rilevamento e non l’emissione, e vale la pena capire la differenza prima di usare il dato per qualsiasi scopo.

Internet Security Research Group ha lanciato l’autorità nel 2016 e distribuisce i certificati gratuitamente con licenza Open Source, con emissione e rinnovo automatizzati tramite il protocollo ACME, in modo che pannelli di hosting, pannelli di controllo e server web possano richiederli senza l’intervento di una persona. L’emissione gratuita e automatizzata è il motivo per cui l’autorità è diventata onnipresente, e l’onnipresenza è proprio ciò che rende incompleto un conteggio basato sulle impronte. Una scansione attribuisce un certificato quando la catena, la stringa dell’emittente o la configurazione circostante vengono acquisite e riconosciute, e non attribuisce nulla quando un proxy, una CDN o un bilanciatore di carico presenta il proprio certificato davanti all’origine.

Un segnale parziale resta un segnale, una volta che si sa rispetto a che cosa è parziale. I siti che terminano il TLS da sé, sul proprio server e con il proprio certificato, sono esattamente quelli in cui il rilevamento funziona, e sono anche la popolazione interessante per molte domande. Un TLS terminato in proprio presuppone un server reale con un amministratore, un processo di rinnovo che può fallire e una configurazione che può diventare obsoleta, ed è per questo che fornitori di hosting, fornitori di servizi gestiti, scanner di sicurezza e prodotti per la gestione dei certificati vogliono sapere chi fa parte di quel gruppo.

La geografia rafforza il concetto. Dei rilevamenti, 14.218 riguardano siti in Corea del Sud, e l’estensione .com ricorre in tutto l’elenco, una distribuzione che riflette quali ecosistemi di hosting emettono certificati in modo direttamente visibile, non quali paesi abbiano adottato la crittografia. Leggere il campo del paese come una misura dell’adozione sarebbe un errore. Leggerlo come una mappa dei luoghi in cui un certo modello di hosting è diffuso è corretto.

Niente di tutto questo si può ricostruire un dominio alla volta, e un dominio alla volta è l’unico modo in cui di solito la domanda viene posta. Un browser mostra a qualsiasi visitatore chi ha emesso il certificato del sito che ha davanti. Nessun browser, però, dirà come si ripartisce per emittente una popolazione di domini, come varia questa ripartizione tra paesi ed estensioni e quale parte gestisce la terminazione in proprio invece di nascondersi dietro l’infrastruttura edge di qualcun altro. L’elenco scaricabile è la forma in cui a questa domanda si può davvero rispondere.
