About Preact

Bundlers are the reason a count like this one reads low. Preact is designed to disappear into an application bundle, and once a build step has minified it alongside everything else, what survives on the page carries no name we can read. The visible cases are the unbundled ones: a script pulled from a public content delivery network, a recognizable module path, a global that a compatibility layer leaves behind in the page.

As of September 2026 that gives us 59 sites. The deployed population is certainly larger, and nobody should use this figure to size adoption of the library, because the figure measures a deployment style rather than a technology choice.

The deployment style is worth having on its own terms. A site that loads Preact from a shared network instead of compiling it in is usually a site where a light view layer was added to pages that were already server rendered, not one where a single-page application was built from the ground up. Released in 2015 under the MIT license and written in JavaScript, the library has always been picked for weight, so finding it in that unbundled form marks pages where somebody cared about payload on a page that was never really a JavaScript application. Marketing sites, embedded widgets, checkout add-ons and content pages with a single interactive island make up much of what we see.

For a researcher the honest use of the export is as a starting set, not a total. Join it against hosting, registration and the rest of the stack detected on the same domains and it answers questions no per-domain lookup can frame: which content management platforms are pairing a light view layer with server rendering, whether agencies reuse the same combination across a client portfolio, which industries do it and which country domains they sit in. Building that from checking addresses one at a time is not practical, and a single-site tool will never tell you when a plugin ecosystem or a theme vendor has quietly standardized on the same runtime across thousands of customers. Read the list as evidence of a pattern, treat the absent domains as unproven rather than clear, and the smallness of the number stops being a problem and becomes the boundary of a well-defined sample.
