The interesting question about a website builder is not what it does but who paid for it. MotoCMS is sold as a hosted visual editor for people who do not write code, and a large share of its distribution has always run through freelance designers and small studios who assemble client sites on top of it rather than through the businesses whose names end up on the domains.

A detection therefore usually points at two parties at once. One is the business being marketed, typically a restaurant, clinic, tradesperson, salon, small agency or creative portfolio. The other is whoever built and still maintains the site, often invisible on the page but responsible for the platform choice. Because the product is proprietary and was launched in 2009 by MotoCMS Ltd, running on PHP the customer never sees, the platform choice is a commitment somebody made and pays to keep. Hosting comes bundled with the current generation of the builder, while the earlier template generations were installed on the customer's own server, so a live site is not by itself proof of an active subscription.

What follows from that is a fairly precise commercial picture. Competing builders and agencies read the same population as redesign prospects, since a template-based site is the one most likely to be rebuilt when the business grows. Cluster analysis adds a second layer, because a single studio's client base often shows up as a group of similar sites, which turns the list into a way of finding the studio rather than just its customers.

The gaps are the usual ones for builders of this kind. Custom domains and white-labelled work make some sites harder to attribute, and heavy template customization can bury the markers detection relies on. We hold no version strings for the platform at all, which means the data can say nothing about how current an individual site is and offers nothing to patch-track.
