About AWStats
Before a tracker could follow a visitor from inside the browser, the only record of who had reached a website was the server's own log file, and AWStats was written to read it. The program parses raw access logs and renders them as pages of counts, referrers, requested paths, user agents and inferred locations. No script goes into the site, nothing runs in the visitor's browser, and the visitor is never asked to agree to anything, which is why the approach never entirely died out even after client-side measurement took over the category.
Age is part of the story. The project dates to 1997 and is written in Perl, a combination that suited the shared hosting era, when a control panel and a CGI-capable server were what a small site actually had. Hosting companies bundled it, and that fact changes how the fingerprint should be read. On a large share of the sites where we find it, nobody at the site chose it. The host installed it, and the detection is describing the hosting stack rather than a decision the site owner made.
Detection carries a second bias worth stating plainly. A carefully configured installation writes its reports into a directory that is either password protected or linked from nowhere, and a crawler cannot see it. What we can fingerprint is the subset of installations whose report pages are publicly reachable. Our count is therefore both a fraction of the real installed base and skewed toward the exposed end of it, which is an unusual property for a data set to have and a genuinely useful one for a security researcher, because a public report page leaks referrer strings, internal paths and visitor origins that the site owner probably never meant to publish.
As of October 2026 we detect AWStats on 3 sites. Version reporting adds another layer, because a report page generally states the release that generated it. We record 3 distinct versions in the wild, and 7.9 (build 20230108) is the string our crawler reads most often. A log analyser is exactly the sort of software that gets installed once and then runs untouched for years, so the version distribution works as a rough proxy for how long ago each host last refreshed its panel software.
Reading AWStats as a competitor to hosted analytics products misses what it indicates. The GPL v3 licence means there is no vendor, no contract and no customer list to compare against, and the population we can see is defined by hosting defaults, exposure and neglect rather than by purchase decisions. A downloadable list is what makes that population analysable at all. Per-domain lookups confirm that a given site has a public stats page. The full export shows which hosting providers still ship the tool, which countries and top-level domains the exposed installations cluster in, and how the count moves between one file and the next.
